About SME Standards

Based on the principles of ISO, SME Standards are basic management system standards, tailored to the needs of SMEs.  They enable SMEs to implement good management disciplines in order to give their customers confidence in their use of good practice and commitment to improvement and to achieve the cost savings that come from effective management systems.

All SME Standards work to the principle of repeat and improve.  In other words, continue good practice already underway and make progress towards new improvements.

For each SME Standard we offer two levels of achievement:

Committed

If you want to show your intent to improve but are not ready for a fully-fledged management system, then this is for you.

Our Committed option is a quick and simple way to show customers and employees that your organisation has good practice and is committed to improving.

Certified

If you want to meet SME Standards with a management system that has been inspected against the Standard requirements, then this is for you.

Our SME Standards are uniquely designed to be relevant to your organisation and simple to implement.

Each SME Standard-Certified takes the same approach, underpinned by the same management system princples as ISO.    They are are made up of 4 sections, each one focussing on a critical aspect of operating an effective management system:  .

Through this simple Commit-Assess-Do-Review framework, your organisation has the flexibility to easily target and implement the actions that best suits its needs and opportunities

About this Standard

Being more sustainable is something every organisation can work towards.  it is about operating profitably while taking responsibility for decisions that impact on the environment and sociey.

Improving your business' sustainability could be the difference between success and struggle.  Businesses that work unsustainably and neglect their environmental and social responsibility are likely to lose out to competitors as their customers, employees, partners and funders choose to work with companies that care about our planet and the wellbeing of the people on it.

Through simple actions such as reducing waste or supporting your local community, you can really make a difference.

As an SME, your business has an advantage, because it can be flexible and nimble, executing simple changes that make good business sense.

Achieving SME Standards:Sustainability is clear evidence of excellence in integrating sustainability into your organisation's operations.

About this Standard

An organisation's carbon footprint is made by the emissions from all its activities, from the energy use of buildings to transport and waste.

With much publicity about the climate emergency, businesses and consumers are increasingly demanding that the companies they work with are taking action to reduce their impact on the planet and tackle climate change.

Taking demonstrable action to reduce carbon offers a competitive advantage and with careful planning, reducing an organisation's carbon footprint can result in significant cost savings.

The free guidance for this Standard includes a cargon footprint calculator which helps you convert data such as energy use into kgCO2e.  This is the accepted unit used to measure a carbon footprint which bundles all greenhouse gases into one single number.

Achieving SME Standards:Carbon Footprint is clear evidence of your organisation's commitment to 'do your bit' to help solve the climate crisis for future generations.

About this Standard

Managing environmental performance helps an organisation to operate more efficiently (reducing waste, energy etc),  and reduces the risk of pollution incidents and legal non-compliance.

More and more customers and stakeholders are expecting organisations to demonstrate best practice in managing their impact on the environment.  This might be investors/grant funders or customers wanting to ensure their suppliers are taking their responsibilities seriously.

Achieving SME Standards:Environment is clear evidence of your organisation's commitment to effectively manage its environmental imapct.

Complying with the law is a must for an environmentally responsible organisation, but understanding your obligations can be tricky.  The first difficulty is finding out what regulations apply, then trying to understand what needs to be done to comply.  We know this takes time and some expertise so we've taken the pain out of understanding environmental legislation by including an online Legal Wizard in the free guidance for this Standard (Certified).

You simply answer some questions about your activities to generate your own bespoke Legal Register, listing the legislation that applies and how to comply.
